What Is A landscape Garden

What Is A landscape Garden?

When people think about horticulture, they can think of quiet days in the garden, slowly put small flowers in loose soil. But not all gardening is like this. Horticulture takes many forms and one of the most important is landscaping. Landscape gardening combines a number of elements of horticulture, construction, and more to create a method to completely change a garden. But what are we really talking when we talk about landscaping? Let’s know.

Garden Landscaping:

If you are currently looking at your garden and imagine an overgrown pergola in one corner, with a paved path leading to it and perhaps some raised beds built from railway sleepers, then you need a landscaper.

Landscaping is more than just planting flowers, it includes building structures, dividing gardens into different levels, and much more.

For this reason, many skills are required to perform such work, such as carpenter and bricklayer qualifications.

Landscaping a garden is necessary when it needs to be completely renovated. Some of the most common tasks performed by landscapers include:

  • Remove old garden items and dispose of waste.
  • Installation of new floor elements such as pavement or terrace.
  • Build structures such as flower beds, pergolas and perhaps even outbuildings and sheds.
  • Replace sod or grass.
  • Division of the garden into different zones and levels.
  • Added features like plants.
  • Advise the client and give advice on garden maintenance.

With all of these different tasks expected of a landscaper, it is difficult to find someone who has mastered all of the required skills.

For this reason, landscaping is often divided into two sections, hard and soft.

What is Hard Landscaping?

Gardening and landscaping refer to the construction and installation of structures such as roads and buildings. These jobs often require specialized machinery and skills in areas such as carpentry and construction.

A good way to remember what is considered hard and what is considered soft is to think about the materials used.

Hard landscaping is often necessary when using hard materials such as wood and stone.

At Southwest London Gardener, we have a team with the skills to carry out even the most demanding landscaping jobs, as demonstrated by some of our projects, such as this complete garden renovation in Clapham, which combined many sophisticated landscaping elements, such as the installation of new seating and flooring, as well as storage space under the stairs.

Hardscaping is an essential part of any garden transformation, but no garden is complete without its soft counterpart.

What is Soft Landscaping?

Like hard landscaping, soft landscaping is also called landscaping because of the materials used.

This method focuses more on things like flowers, plants, and grass.

Soft landscaping plays a key role in any landscaping project because it adds beautiful finishing touches that make each project special.

For example, look at this garden room in Battersea, which was covered in hard porcelain tiles, making it unattractive and unsuitable for children. Our team came in, demolished the old tiles and created a lush green lawn, perfect for the kids to play on.

To achieve careful landscaping, it is necessary to have a good knowledge of plants and nature. Much of the work is choosing the perfect plants that fit into the garden design and bring it to life.

This garden in Sutton had a fairly minimalist design, but the addition of some plants along the fence and a special dogwood tree really made it stand out.

Garden Landscaping Trends

Just like in fashion, styles and trends come and go in landscape gardening.

With that in mind, here are some items that seem to be proving really popular right now.

  • Outside offices –The pandemic has changed many things. This meant more people working from home and many people falling in love with their gardens again. Both have led to a significant increase in the desire to have an external office or dependency. In fact, the number of homes with this feature has increased eleven-fold over the last decade and we believe it is a feature that will persist into the future.
  • Water Features – Recently, water features have become increasingly popular and outsell other items such as solar lights and garden mirrors combined. And there are good reasons for this. A water fountain is a perfect accessory. It’s great for wildlife, creates a calm atmosphere and looks great too. What do you not like?
  • Shaped lawns – The dublin is seeing a rise in popularity of lawns that are not your ordinary square or rectangles. It seems people may be looking more to adding features that take away segments of grass or shaping their lawn in an unusual way. It’s certainly a great way to add another element to your garden and create a real talking point.
  • Wild Planting –  If you’re looking for a low-maintenance garden, than wildflowers may be for you. These tough, self-reproducing plants look great and don’t take as much looking after, which may be why they’re such a popular choice. Not only that, but they also attract plenty of nature to your garden, which is always a plus.
